Conference Description:

If couple therapy is one of the most difficult of therapies, working with high-conflict couples takes the challenges to another level. In this 2-hour training, we’ll look at common sources of conflict and initial presentations, discuss from a CBT and systems foundation how to quickly isolate dysfunctional patterns, calm the emotional waters, and anticipate transference. Combining PowerPoint, discussion, and role-play, we’ll walk through the goals and tasks of those crucial openings session, discuss how to use homework, what traps to avoid, when to refer individuals out, and most of all, how to ensure that clients feel differently when they walk out than when they walked in. If you are new to couple therapy, you will leave with a solid model; if you are experienced, you will be challenged and invigorated.

Part 1:  Disarming the Narcissist By Wendy T. Behary, CSW

This webinar will help you establish a sturdier foothold for empathically holding narcissistic clients accountable and setting necessary limits. Through empathic curiosity and confrontation, you will learn how to diffuse distractions such as underlying shame and insecurity and disarm the narcissist from shifting into modes (their classic “hiding places”) such as detachment, dismissiveness, and overcompensating, entitlement, self-righteous, and criticalness. Empathic confrontation is a strategy that fortifies access to and maintenance of meaningful consequences while in therapy. It also helps to bypass power struggles.

You will acquire an applied understanding of schema theory to help you to conceptualize your narcissistic patient’s schemas/modes (as well as your own) and how these schemas and schema modes interact in therapy. By having a firmer grasp of your own schemas and a better understanding of the narcissist’s makeup, you can overcome obstacles in the treatment room and maintain the necessary leverage for meeting needs and correcting early biased emotional experiences.

Part 2:  How to Work with High Conflict Couples By Robert Taibbi, CSW

In this workshop Robert will discuss how to work with high-conflict couples—how to effectively move through those crucial opening sessions, how to change dysfunctional patterns and reset the emotional climate. He will be doing a role play of an initial session and there will be time for discussion.
